The reason HIV has been so successful in Africa, is that people don't want to be ostracized by others knowing that they have the illness. This occurs in every poor community with all major illnesses through out the world, including Western Countries. People don't go to their small health clinic until it is too late and by then, they have passed the illness on to others.
Ebola is the same. This is why the numbers are climbing rapidly. So, if a person knows they have Ebola - they get locked away in quarantine to die!! Uneducated poor people don't see this as a good thing.
After reading about the armed insurgents attacking a city and Ebola patients escaping from a hospital so they wouldn't be killed - it reminds of the fast moving zombies (Insurgents - not thinking, after power and resources) and the slow moving zombies (people now spreading Ebola).
Both will kill you.

And those are just the reported cases. I wonder how large the percentage of the total number of cases (both reported and unreported) that are unreported

People live in denial, they don't want to believe or they purposely don't state all the facts as the latest person in the USA has done. He will be telling a story to justify his travel and why he didn't tell health personnel where he had travelled. He wanted to get back to his Western Country ASAP to receive the best treatment - not to remain in a third world country where many people are dying. This will be the cause of a world outbreak. As with all diseases, not all the symptoms need to show in the carrier for a carrier to continue on and spread the joy.
On passing through Manila Airport, the thermal detectors were operating and Health Cards being given to Airport Authorities as you depart the Airplane. This is too late - checks need to be done as people board flights. Total lock down of countries is required now.
