It seems like he wasn't very well prepared but at least he had a good mental attitude which is arguably as important. Relying on a GPS though is a real faux pas.
I'm sure we've all done similar though and just got away with it. I used to assume that every day walk would go tits up so I would carry a bivvy, food etc on the assumption that I would be out for at least 1-2 nights. But on that walk I did a few weeks ago I didn't even have some string to fix my shoe then the sole came off.
I used to see people doing the summit walk to Kosciuszko in T-shirts with kids or even a baby in the same, and that's in the mountains where you can get a blizzard at any time of the year. The mind boggles, but AFAIK they all get away with it as I've never seen a news story about one of them getting into trouble.

That's what's important. The mindset.

You're finished by the rule of threes: 3 wks if you have no food, 3 days if you have no water, 3 min if you have no air, and 3 sec if you GIVE UP.

On the subject of water, how do we convert rain water to drinkable water? Any way? Thanks mates! quote author=" overlord" source="/post/151/thread" timestamp="1406683293"] You're finished by the rule of threes: 3 wks if you have no food, 3 days if you have no water, 3 min if you have no air, and 3 sec if you GIVE UP. 3 hours if you have no shelter (if in the middle of a storm, etc.)[/quote]

goodrain water is essentially drinkable water _already_ unless you've been in a smog filled/ haze filled environment. You _do_ have to filter and boil the water to be sure. All regular purification methods can be used. Lifestraw, OKO water bottle. Bio-filter followed by disinfecting by boiling, chlorine, iodine etc Still need help? start a new thread and we'll start regurgitating all our knowledge....

If you have a Rain Catchment system, have a filter to remove initial debris from the water (leaves, twigs, including major particulate matters).
Secondly, have a filtering plan in place (use of boiling, chemicals, or filter equipment).
A good approach would be initial filter (large pieces removed), boil, then filter with a micron filter.

Haven't bought any of the 3 brands you mentioned. Price wise and specifications which one you recommend? Thanks!
