I bought a 35lt, 3 day pack, from eBay and discovered it didn't have a rigid frame. It did have an internal pocket that had limited uses but could be used to fit an internal frame.
Internal/external pack frames can be made from almost any material, preferably strong and light weight. Materials could be aluminium, wood or bamboo, pvc, etc.....
The pvc frame could be used by itself by adding ropes or purpose made shoulder straps and then attach items direct to the frame. I guess it would carry 10-15kg by itself. The frame inside the pack is held together by PVC solvent cement and the shape of the pack. On this occasion, the pack is an odd shape and held fast in position, even without glue, and would carry approx. 25kg (the straps would break before any other part). It has held together well after testing. The only thing I did with the pack was to adjust the shoulder straps, the pack sat well on my back and all excess movement ceased.
Photo 1 - pack without frame.
Photo 2 - pvc frame completed prior to placing it into the pack. The odd shape took more time to build but had added benefits.
Photo 3 - rigid pack with internally fitted pvc frame.
